Notes

Came to USA with his parents in the early 1800's. According to John IIIs death
cert, John II was born in NY. Also according to ILL 1880 Cencus, IIIs parents
were both born in NY. John III & Eliza were living with Eliza's parents in the
1855 census.

In the 1860 Census in IL, DeKalb County, Squaw Grove Township, on page 197, there is a John Van Vleck whom is a merchant and is 30 years old, that was born in New York. This may well be John Henry Van Vleck II. If that is the case, he appears to be
living in a boarding house (no Elisa). Further, this is the timeframe that John Van Vleck was found in New York living with a Duncan family, so there is a possibility that Elisa died, or John left her, and her parents are raising their child, John Van
Vleck III.

1900 Kankakee County Census:
1900 Kankakee, Illinois
John H Van Vleck 52 NY England NY
Adelia A Van Vleck 39
Harry R Van Vleck 21
Jerome B Van Vleck 19
Edna E Van Vleck 17
Percy W Van Vleck 11

1880 Illinois Census:
indexed as "blake" in 1880 Illinois > Kankakee > Limestone
John Von Blake 30 ny farm labor parents b ny
Delia Von Blake 18 illinois ny ny
Harry Von Blake 1

1855 Auburn Ward 1 NY Census (They said they were 7 years resident)
John G Duncan 50 Carpenter Massachussettes
Elanor M Duncan 49 Wife Massachussettes
Eliza ? 27 Daugher born Madison County Married Taylor
Eleanor M Duncan 25 Daughter born Madison County
Catherine Duncan 23 Daughter born Eni County
Philander Duncan 21 Son born Madison County Carpenter
Albert G Duncan 18 Son Onega County Carpenter
Louise G Duncan 16 Daughter Onondaga County
Amelia E Duncan 12 Daughter Cayuga County
John H Van Vleck 7 Grandson Cayuga County

Also, consider the following:

Van Vleck could have been:
Van Vleet, Van Vliet, Van Fleck, Van Fleckern, Van Bliet, or any variation thereof.

Furthermore, it is possible that Cayuga County is NOT the place John Henry III was born in and came from but, instead, Cayuga is the name of another town in another state out east.

From a response about the name on the internet: Van Vleck is actually an Americanized form of the original: "van Kleeck", originating from "Balthazar van der Lippstadt" of Lipstadt, Germany....who moved to the Netherlands, and somehow picked up the
surname "van Kleeck". Upon moving to Upstate NY, the name evolved into van Vliet, Van Cleef, and Van Vleck

There was a Henry Van Vleck in the Civil War from Cayuga County NY that could be John Henry Van Vleck II -- he was 42 when he enlisted and this age would fit John Henry Van Vleck II ... his information:
CW:AG: Henry Van Vleck. 42, en. 8/11/1862 at conquest. pri. co. c. 9th art. wounded 4/2/1865 at petersburg, died of wounds, 6/14/1865 at armory square hospital, washington.
